Outdoor Showers
Leisurecraft outdoor showers are manufactured from Canadian cedar and are designed for outdoor use. Simple cleaning, good drainage and proper winterization are the keys to long service life.
Before Each Use
- Inspect the shower area for slipping hazards.
- Make sure the platform or base is stable and level.
- Check hoses and water connections for visible leaks.
- Allow the water to run briefly before entering, especially if the shower has been sitting unused.
- Test the water temperature before use.
After Each Use / Day-to-Day Care
- Allow excess water to drain away from the shower.
- Do not allow standing water to remain around the cedar base.
- Remove leaves, grass and debris from the platform.
- Rinse off soap, shampoo, chlorine or salt-water residue.
- Allow the cedar surfaces to air-dry naturally.
- Make sure hoses are positioned so they do not create a trip hazard.
Regular Cleaning
- Rinse cedar periodically with clean water.
- For heavier dirt, use warm water, mild soap and a soft brush or cloth.
- Clean fixtures with a mild cleaner appropriate for their finish.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners or pads that may scratch metal components.
- Do not use bleach or harsh chemical cleaners on cedar.
- Avoid high-pressure washing, which can damage the surface of the wood.
Cedar Care
Natural cedar is designed to withstand outdoor conditions.
You have two options:
Natural Weathering
- Leave the cedar untreated.
- Over time, sunlight and weather will turn the cedar an attractive silver-grey.
- This colour change is natural and does not mean the wood is deteriorating.
Maintain the Cedar Colour
- Apply a penetrating exterior wood finish suitable for cedar.
- Leisurecraft recommends Livos exterior stains/oils.
- Reapply as required when the colour begins to fade.
Seasonal Inspection
In spring and fall:
- Check all screws and fasteners.
- Inspect water fittings and hoses.
- Check the platform and base for stability.
- Confirm water drains away from the shower.
- Check cedar for rough areas or splinters.
- Lightly sand rough areas if necessary.
- Inspect shower heads and clean mineral deposits where required.
Winterization
This is particularly important in climates where temperatures fall below freezing.
Before freezing weather:
- Shut off the water supply.
- Disconnect the garden hose or supply line.
- Open the shower valve.
- Completely drain water from the shower head, pipes, valves and hoses.
- Leave valves open where appropriate to prevent trapped water.
- Store removable hoses indoors where possible.
Damage caused by water freezing inside plumbing components can often be prevented simply by fully draining the system before winter.
Once a Year
- Thoroughly clean the cedar.
- Inspect and tighten hardware.
- Inspect plumbing fittings for leakage or corrosion.
- Clean the shower head and remove mineral buildup.
- Check drainage around the base.
- Lightly sand any rough areas.
- Reapply exterior wood finish if desired.
Avoid
- Allowing water to remain in plumbing during freezing weather.
- Allowing standing water around the cedar base.
- Bleach or harsh chemical cleaners.
- High-pressure washing.
- Film-forming finishes that can peel unless specifically designed for exterior cedar.
