If your sauna sits within about 30 feet of your electrical panel, electric is usually the simpler and cheaper path. If you're building somewhere remote, or you're drawn to the process of tending a fire, wood is worth the extra cost and effort — plenty of owners say that's the whole point.

05 Sizing

Sizing Your Heater

As a rough ballpark, that's about 1 kW per 45 to 50 cubic feet of well-insulated space for electric heaters; wood stoves are rated the same way, by volume range rather than kilowatts.

Multiply length by width by height to get your interior volume, then check it against the heater's rated range. Volume alone doesn't tell the full story — large glass, uninsulated walls, exterior doors, high ceilings, and cold climates all add to the heat a sauna needs, and many manufacturers publish correction factors to account for it.

Undersizing is a common, costly mistake — the heater never quite reaches temperature and wears out faster. Oversizing isn't automatically better either: exceeding a heater's rated maximum can complicate electrical permitting and inspection, since many authorities require installation within the listed range. In prolonged extreme cold, sizing up slightly near the top of that range can mean faster heat-up and quicker recovery after the door opens.
